Maldives may be the country with the most airports per capita in the world. The tiny island nation, with a population of just over 400,000, currently boasts 18 operational airports, with many new developments in the pipeline set to open in the next couple of years. The majority of international incoming traffic is still directed to Velana International Airport, which is located near the capital city of Male. It serves as the main connecting point for over 175 resorts currently in operation in the Maldives.
Maafaru Airport in Noonu Atoll is the second busiest airport for international incoming tourists, with regular private jet arrivals to tourist resorts in Noonu, Raa, and Baa Atoll, all located in close proximity to the airport.
Gan Airport in Addu is still utilized by some airlines for group charters to bring in selected charter flights to resorts and guesthouses in the Addu area.
In 2024, Dhaalu Atoll's Kudahuvadhoo Airport started direct flights to India, adding another route and becoming the fourth airport to operate regular international operations.
Apart from the four airports mentioned above, Gaafu Alif Koodoo Airport & Alif Alif Maamigili Airport currently have private jet landing capabilities for selected aircraft types. However, the majority of the other airports are still used for domestic operations, carrying local passengers and tourists to selected islands via wheeled aircraft.
While Maldives boasts the biggest seaplane operation in the world, shuttling tourists to and from Male’ Airport, domestic airports are becoming the second-best option for tourist resorts and tourists alike for internal transportation within the Maldives due to convenience and limited connections.
However, with the growing number of tourist beds in the country, domestic airports may play a bigger role in the transport sector for tourists and locals alike in the near future, especially with limited options available for other transport options.
The aviation industry, especially the domestic airline industry, has huge growth potential with more organization and special marketing attention given to this area.
